it’s amazing how quickly you can establish a routine and become part of a neighborhood in just a week.
airbnb home: private room rental
neighborhood: thonglor
street: sukhimvitz at soi 45
bts transit stop: phrom phong
it was our very first airbnb rental, and worked out great. fyi: airbnb is an international room/home rental website for those looking to avoid traditional hotels. our bangkok home’s owner (our host) is an American who has lived in Asia for 12+ years. for our first stop in asia, it was nice to have western-style comfort and someone who spoke english to rely on for information and tips.
we rented the smaller room ($35/night), but as luck would have it, the larger upstairs room was available after our first night so kelly graciously let us move on up – literally. we had an entire floor to ourselves with a suite-style bedroom, large private bath, sitting area, refrigerator & coffee marker, Apple TV and two private balconies with views of the city (link here). amazing.
the home is right off a major road – sukumvitz – and in the heart of everything you’d want to walk to, but the street remains super quaint and quiet. at the road’s dead end is an awesome boutique hotel, Cabochon.
we were within a block of tons of wine bars, beer places, coffee shops and a grocery market – TOPS Market.
{our morning coffee stop}
playing games with kelly – our host – at HOBS (house of beers) on rain hill.
our main mode of transportation was the BTS (bangkok transit system) which ran 130 BHAT for a day pass ($3.50). we did a ton of our “observing” on the BTS and made up a ton of stupid songs and inside jokes based on the funny names of things. like the “mo chit” line that resulted in us singing, “to mo chit! to mo chit to quit!”
in just a week, we found a tailor and had some alterations done. i think jeffy had a love/hate relationship with me.
oh, and we had two resident felines – lead and sid – to give us our furry friend fix.
